How to Remove Duplicate Lines
- Paste your list into the input box, one item per line.
- Choose your options: keep the original order or sort A–Z / Z–A, and decide whether matching should be case-sensitive.
- Click "Remove Duplicates." The first occurrence of each unique line is kept; later repeats are deleted.
- Copy or download the cleaned list.
The stats line tells you how many lines you started with, how many duplicates were removed, and how many unique lines remain.
What Counts as a Duplicate?
Two lines are duplicates when their text matches after applying your options:
- Default (case-insensitive): "Apple", "apple", and "APPLE" are the same line — only the first is kept, in its original casing.
- Case-sensitive mode: "Apple" and "apple" are treated as different lines and both are kept.
- With trimming on: " apple" and "apple" are duplicates, since leading and trailing spaces are removed first.
Only the first occurrence survives, so the original order option preserves the order in which unique items first appeared.
Real-World Uses for a Dedupe Tool
- Email lists. Merged newsletter lists almost always contain repeats. Deduping before sending avoids emailing the same person twice and keeps you compliant with unsubscribe expectations.
- SEO keyword lists. Keyword research exports are full of near-duplicate and exact-duplicate terms. A clean list makes content planning far easier.
- Data cleanup. Exported CSV columns pasted as plain text — customer names, product SKUs, URLs — often repeat. Dedupe before analysis.
- Giveaway entries. When entries are collected as one-per-line, removing duplicates enforces one-entry-per-person fairness.
- Class rosters and attendance. Merge two class lists without double-counting students.
- Developer workflows. Clean up lists of IDs, paths, or log lines before scripting against them.
Tips for Best Results
- Trim first, ask questions later. Invisible trailing spaces are the #1 reason "duplicates" survive deduping. Leave trimming on — or pre-clean messy text with our extra space remover before deduping.
- Sort when you need to compare. Alphabetical order makes it easy to eyeball the result for near-duplicates the tool correctly kept (like "John Smith" vs "Jon Smith"). For a dedicated sorter with natural number ordering, try our alphabetize list tool.
- Work on a copy. Deduping is destructive — the removed lines are gone. Keep your original list until you have verified the result.
- For huge lists (tens of thousands of lines), the tool still works, but a spreadsheet's built-in dedupe may be more convenient for further analysis.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the duplicate line remover work?
Paste your list and click Remove Duplicates. The tool compares every line, keeps the first occurrence of each unique line, and deletes the rest. You can also sort the result and clean up extra whitespace.
Is duplicate detection case-sensitive?
By default it is not case-sensitive, so "Apple" and "apple" count as duplicates and only the first is kept. Turn on the case-sensitive option if you want them treated as different lines.
Can I sort the list while removing duplicates?
Yes. Choose A–Z or Z–A sorting to alphabetize the deduplicated list, or leave sorting off to keep the original order of first occurrences.
What happens to empty lines?
The "remove empty lines" option (on by default) deletes blank lines from the result. Turn it off if you want blank lines preserved as separators.
Is my list uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so email lists, keyword lists, and other data never leave your device.
