Few things in design are as simultaneously beloved and misused as lorem ipsum. Used well, it is the fastest way to evaluate a layout. Used badly, it ships to production, confuses users, and tells Google your page says nothing. Here is the practical line between the two.

When Lorem Ipsum Is the Right Choice

  • Early wireframes and mockups. When the design is being judged — spacing, hierarchy, typography — placeholder text keeps reviewers focused on the visuals instead of proofreading draft copy.
  • Testing text volume. Generate roughly the word count the real content will have to expose overflow, awkward orphans, and cramped columns before content arrives.
  • Template and theme demos. Theme marketplaces and template galleries need neutral filler that works for every buyer; lorem ipsum is the standard.
  • Print layout proofs. Checking margins, gutters, and page flow in brochures and books is exactly what the text was invented for in the 1500s.

In all of these cases, the audience understands the text is temporary. That shared understanding is what makes it safe.

When You Should Avoid It

  • Live websites. Ever. Placeholder text on a public page looks unfinished, erodes trust, and gives search engines nothing meaningful to index. It is the most common and most damaging misuse.
  • Readability testing. You cannot judge whether real content will be readable from gibberish — sentence length, vocabulary, and structure all differ. Use draft copy.
  • User testing and demos. Participants get distracted or confused by meaningless text, and stakeholders may assume half-finished copy is final.
  • Client presentations without a disclaimer. Say out loud that the text is temporary, or it will mysteriously survive into the launch.
  • Email templates. A test send with lorem ipsum that escapes to real subscribers is a classic, painful mistake.

Better Alternatives

When lorem ipsum is not right, reach for one of these:

  • Real draft copy — even rough, it beats gibberish for every purpose except pure visual layout.
  • Descriptive placeholders like [Customer testimonial — 2 sentences], which communicate what is missing.
  • Skeleton screens — gray content blocks for loading states in apps, which set better expectations than fake text.
  • Content from a similar page — borrowing structure from an existing article shows realistic rhythm without writing from scratch.

The Pre-Launch Checklist

Before any site goes live, run this five-minute sweep:

  1. Search the entire project for "lorem" — every instance should be gone.
  2. Check image alt text and meta descriptions too; placeholders hide there as well.
  3. Confirm each page has real headings that describe its actual content.
  4. Read one page out loud — anything that sounds like filler probably is.
