The Common App personal essay must be between 250 and 650 words. That range is hard-coded into the application: paste in 651 words and it will not submit; submit 249 and it will not submit either. The limit applies to the main personal statement (the seven prompts), not to the shorter supplemental essays, which carry their own limits — often 150, 250, or 350 words.
Do You Need the Full 650 Words?
No — and admissions officers say so openly. A tight, vivid 520-word essay beats a padded 650-word essay every time. The most common successful range is 500–650 words: enough room for a real story with reflection, without filler. If your draft is 430 strong words, do not bloat it to 650; if it is 700, you have cutting to do (see below). Under 500 words, ask yourself honestly whether you have developed the idea fully — most under-length essays are under-explored, not concise.
How to Cut a 750-Word Draft to 650
- Kill the throat-clearing. The first paragraph of most drafts is warm-up. Delete it and start at paragraph two — you will rarely miss it.
- One example per point. Two anecdotes making the same point? Keep the stronger one and cut the other entirely.
- Hunt "very," "really," and "in order to." A single editing pass for filler phrases typically saves 30–50 words.
- Shorten the ending. Conclusions that restate the whole essay waste 60+ words. Land the final image or insight in two sentences.
Checking Your Word Count Accurately
Draft in whatever editor you like, but verify with two counters: our free word counter while you write, and the Common App text box itself for the final paste. Word, Google Docs, and web counters occasionally disagree by a word or two on hyphenated terms and numbers — the Common App's own count is the one that decides submission, so the last check always happens there. And if you are also applying in the UK, our UCAS personal statement guide covers the 4,000-character limit on that side of the Atlantic.
